La Jolla Cove Suites

La Jolla Cove Suites is the only oceanfront hotel in La Jolla Village. Located directly across Coast Boulevard from Ellen Browning Scripps Park, guests can choose from studios, suites, or bungalows in the main building, Annex, Cove II, or Terrace. The charming seaside resort hotel offers epic views of playful seals and sea lions, scuba divers, snorkelers, and kayakers in the cove, Scripp’s Park, La Jolla Shores, Scripps Pier, and the sparkling blue Pacific Ocean.

La Jolla Cove Suites was a third generation family-owned hotel built in 1959. After struggling to increase occupancy and revenue, the owners of the hotel called upon Anthony Melchiorri of the hit show Hotel Impossible to make it profitable again. Together, Anthony and the hotel brought the aging property up to La Jolla’s seaside destination standards, and the family sold it in 2015. You’ll reap the rewards of their efforts with renovated rooms, new beds, and the best unobstructed ocean views in the village.

La Jolla Cove Suites Ambiance

La Jolla Cove Suites has a relaxed beachside charm reminiscent of simpler times in the Village. The lobby is unpretentious with tray ceilings, recessed lights, and a muted color palette expressed in beige walls and gray carpet, tile, and brick. Purple modern seating in front of a grand window overlooking Scripps Park give the space a pop of color. Renovated rooms and suites are beach chic, spacious, and comfortable.

La Jolla Cove Suites is an affordable choice among many of La Jolla’s more sophisticated hotel options. Most accommodations have been recently updated, and almost all have balconies with ocean views. The heated pool and Jacuzzi are open year-round. Guests can make use of kitchenettes and modern gas barbecue grills, making this hotel a great choice for families and groups.

La Jolla Cove Rooms

The four-story main hotel at La Jolla Cove Suites is front and center on the property. Facing the front entrance, you’ll notice a six-story building to your left; this is the Annex. To the right of the hotel is Cove II where you’ll find two-bedroom, two-bath suites, and behind and rising above the main hotel you’ll find La Jolla Cove Suite’s Terrace bungalows that are reserved for long-stays.

In the main hotel and Annex, there are five types of accommodations. The Oceanfront Queen Studio Suite is 350 square feet with a Serta Perfect Sleeper Bed, kitchenette, flat-screen TV with premium channels, oceanfront balcony, and complimentary breakfast and Wi-Fi. The One-bedroom Oceanfront Suite is 500 square feet with a separate living room and sleeper sofa, and all the same amenities as the Queen Studio Suite.

Deluxe Oceanfront Suites are 900-square-foot one-bedroom suites with either two queen-size or one king-size Serta Perfect Sleeper Beds, separate living rooms with sofa sleepers, full kitchens, dining rooms, flat-screen TVs with premium channels, and large furnished oceanfront balconies. They also include complimentary breakfast and Wi-Fi.

La Jolla Cove Suites also offers several economy rooms on the poolside of the hotel, facing away from the ocean – an unexpected bargain in this neighborhood of two million dollar homes. The 165-square-foot rooms are tiny by comparison to the hotel’s spacious suites, but perfect for guests who want to experience a La Jolla vacation on a budget. Cozy rooms feature one queen-size bed, walk-in shower, flat-screen TV, and table and chairs. They come with the same complimentary Wi-Fi and breakfast as the suites.

Cove II offers extra-large two-bedroom suites with 1,000 square feet of living space. Each bedroom has one queen-size Serta Perfect Sleeper Bed. Cove suites also have two bathrooms and include a flat-screen TV with premium channels, separate living room with sofa sleeper, kitchenette, furnished balcony, and complimentary breakfast and Wi-Fi; these suites do not have ocean views.

Terrace accommodations are La Jolla Cove Suite’s vacation rentals and are available for extended stays from five to 28 nights. The bungalows come in studio, and one- or two-bedroom suite options. They are located behind and above the property; two-bedroom suites require taking stairs up the hill. There is no elevator service to the two-bedroom bungalows. The ocean view accommodations offer panoramic views of La Jolla Cove. La Jolla Cove Suites describe their Terrace extended stay bungalows this way, It’s just like home with a better view.

Spacious two-bedroom Terrace bungalow suites have queen-size Serta Perfect Sleeper Beds in the bedrooms, a separate living room with flat-screen TV, a full kitchen, a furnished balcony with panoramic views, and either one or two bathrooms. Depending on design and whether you choose one or two bathroom units, they range from 1,100 to 1,400 square feet. One-bedroom bungalow suites feature the same amenities and two queen-size beds in the bedroom. Terrace bungalow suites also include complimentary breakfast and Wi-Fi.

Terrace studio bungalows are 350 square feet and have a queen-size Serta Perfect Sleeper Bed, kitchenette, flat-screen TV with premium channels, and furnished balcony. Guests can choose full ocean view or partial ocean view studios. Both include the La Jolla Cove Suites complimentary breakfast and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Room tip: The consensus of previous guests is to upgrade to oceanfront suites and stay on the third level and above to avoid street and park noise. Some guests complain about fourth floor rooms in the main building, because of the rooftop deck that doubles as a wedding venue that can be quite loud. Fifth and sixth floor Annex suites offer stunning views and are quietest. The front desk provides ear plugs to light sleepers.

La Jolla Cove Suites Amenities

La Jolla Cove Suites amenities include a heated saltwater pool, saltwater Jacuzzi, beach access, bike rentals, health club passes, complimentary breakfast, complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, an outdoor barbecue terrace with gas grills, airport transportation, and paid on-site parking. Current zoning regulations prevent La Jolla Cove Suites from offering an in-house bar and restaurant, but you’ll find a variety of restaurants on Prospect Street outside the property’s back gate.

George’s at the Cove is a swanky Prospect Street restaurant that offers an á la carte menu or prix fixe fine dining culinary extravaganzas. More casual fare is available on the Ocean Terrace overlooking La Jolla Cove. Celebrity award-winning chef Trey Foshee serves “San Diego on a plate” with California Modern dishes that feature fresh local ingredients. George’s made Fodor’s “World’s Top 10 Restaurants” list.

Burger Lounge is not on Prospect Street, but is still within walking distance of the hotel on Wall Street. The quick-service eatery features grass-fed beef and local produce in a modern space with green business practices. Organic, handcrafted, GMO free, house-made, and Fair Trade values matter to Burger Lounge. They have garnered accolades from CNBC, Bon Appétit Magazine, Red Tricycle, and San Diego Magazine, among others. Eat in, or take your food to go. Scripps Park across the street from the hotel is a great place for a relaxing oceanfront meal.

Whisknladle Bar & Bistro is another great choice located near Burger Lounge on Wall Street. The farm-fresh restaurant creates from-scratch New American farm-to-table fare with French, Spanish, and Italian influences. This popular restaurant tops a number of national “best of” lists, including Condé Nast.

Tip: No matter where your accommodations are – the main building, Annex, Cove II, or Terrace bungalows, you can use your room key to access a short cut to Prospect Street through a gate next to the pool. It can save a lot of walking.

La Jolla Cove Suites Neighborhood

By far, the most popular street in La Jolla Village is Prospect Street, and La Jolla Cove Suites backs up to it. Here you’ll find upscale boutique shops, art galleries, antique stores, and restaurants. This bustling shopping mecca is the juxtaposition of sandy flip-flops and haute couture. Nighttime in the village is magical with musical performances, to dance troupes, to gallery exhibits.

Across the street from La Jolla Suites Hotel, the shaded, grassy Scripps Park offers plenty of space to sit and enjoy the ocean views or share a family picnic. A sidewalk runs all along the Cove past the Children’s Pool toward Hospitals surf spot. At the Children’s Pool, visitors can watch seals and sea lions lolling on the beach. The southern end of the cove offers tide pools to explore during low tide. A little farther is the surfers’ Windansea Beach made famous by the book The Pump House Gang.

Other La Jolla highlights include the Birch Aquarium, La Jolla Open Air Market on Girard Avenue, the Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla Shores wide sandy beach, Torrey Pines State Park and the adjacent public Torrey Pines Golf Course, and the Torrey Pines Glider Port where you can watch hang gliding and paragliding, or try an instructional tandem paraglide flight yourself!
